Founded in 1971, Christiania is a community grounded in diversity and as a creative self-governing system that centers around a unique kind of shared responsibility and inclusion. Today, the freetown is home to around 1,000 people, but it is also one of Denmark’s top attractions and a must-see for visitors.

Christiania’s system reflects Danish design thinking and stands out as a true icon. It’s proof that we can thrive in a system that allows people to live together without too many conflicts. Especially now, as the war in Ukraine rages, this model and way of thinking and acting is more relevant than ever before. A meaningful contribution like this deserves special acknowledgment, making Christiania an obvious choice as the winner of the Icon Award 2022.
